What is Dystonia?

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle spasms. These muscle spasms likely occur because the neurological mechanism that is supposed to make muscles relax does not function properly at times. This often causes opposing muscles (i.e. muscles that should not contract together) contract simultaneously, resulting in repetitive and often twisting movements and possibly irregular posture. The cause of dystonia varies widely, from possibly genetic origins, to trauma and side-effects of certain medications.
